I can see that it’s the post liberalisation Rules that let them do this, but I’m surprised Trading Standards haven’t intervened. Finally, Universal Mail have no control at all over the postal services used. Universal Mail, have negotiated a bulk mail price, which generally means longer delivery times. In practice it’s delayed far more by waiting for a big enough batch to be sent from the U.K. So at a minimum your card is delayed by going via an intermediate country. Once there are enough cards to make a parcel worthwhile (and that may require the destination country to be the same too), they are couriered out there and put into the postal system.

They have agreements, which change from time to time, with mail services in places like Hungary or the Philippines where low-cost international postage is available. What happens when you use these “stamps” is that the Royal Mail sorts them into a batch and passes them on to Universal Mail. #5 and #7 - intrigued (or rather, appalled) by this I dug up a few threads on other forums.
